Does the thought of having root canal therapy make you cringe? Take heart – you’re not alone! Many people have the misconception that root canals are complex, painful treatments. On the contrary, root canals are relatively routine procedures. Through root canal treatment, dentists can treat serious tooth infections to save severely damaged or decayed teeth. At Scenic Bluffs Dental, Drs. Jay Feuillerat and Samantha Clare offer root canal treatment to our patients in Prescott, Wisconsin, and nearby areas.
Understanding the root canal process can take away any anxiety you may be feeling about this treatment.
Teeth comprise three layers: the exterior enamel, the hard dentin beneath the enamel, and a soft interior chamber called the pulp. The pulp contains the tooth’s blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerves. If the pulp becomes compromised by decay or infection, your tooth will die.
In order to save your tooth, our dentists will drill your tooth, remove the infected pulp, and cleanse the chamber and canals of any remaining infection. Once all infection has been removed, we’ll seal your tooth with a special filling to protect it from future decay. Finally, we’ll cap your tooth with a dental crown to strengthen its structure and restore its usefulness. A root canal can restore:
That’s the million-dollar question! The answer is a resounding no! Root canals are performed under local anesthesia, so you feel no discomfort or pain during the procedure. We also offer sedation options like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation to help you relax before and during your treatment. You may experience slight discomfort or soreness for a day or two after your procedure. You can take OTC pain medication to relieve these symptoms.
