If you need a tooth extraction, it’s important to prepare yourself for the precautions and care you’ll need after the procedure. In this post, we’ll go over the key dos and don’ts to bear in mind post-extraction.
A tooth extraction may not feel like a major procedure, but you’re still putting your body through something. It deserves a rest! Free your schedule the day of the surgery, and the following day if you can, and put your feet up. You’ll be better for it!
You should be able to eat after the extraction but do so with discretion. While the numbness remains, avoid solid foods or you could do some damage to your teeth or tongue. And as the numbness wears off, you may have some pain. Stick with soft foods or liquids like smoothies and soup.
Have an ice pack on hand for when you come home after your extraction procedure. This will help ease any pain or discomfort that may appear when the numbness starts to wear off. It’ll also target any swelling that you may experience in the first few days following the procedure.
Two things that you shouldn’t reach for after an extraction: straws and cigarettes. Both require a sucking motion that would disrupt your healing. Additionally, the chemicals that are present in cigarettes can slow down the healing process by preventing clotting and increasing the chance of dry socket. Wait at least 48 hours after the procedure before smoking a cigarette. Or better yet, give it up!
