If you have a damaged or decayed tooth, you may think that extraction is the only option on the table. But guess what? Root canal treatment from Scenic Bluffs Dental can repair and save your tooth from extraction. Unfortunately, most people think that a root canal is an extremely painful procedure, but as you will learn below, the procedure should be entirely pain free!
At the center of every tooth there are several nerves and blood vessels that provide nourishment to that tooth. Unfortunately, the pulp can be infected if you have:
If untreated, the tissues around the tooth become infected, leading to pain and swelling as an abscess forms inside or outside the tooth. Infection can also lead to tooth loss as bacteria weaken the bone that supports your tooth.
Typically, a root canal is an outpatient procedure that can be done within one or two appointments. There is no pain involved because anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Before treatment begins, Dr. Jay takes dental x-rays to examine the tooth and the surrounding bone. Next, he numbs the area around the infected tooth and creates a small opening in the crown to access the inside of your tooth. Then, he removes the infected nerves and blood vessels and sanitizes the area to eliminate any lurking bacteria.
After a thorough cleaning, Dr. Jay seals the tooth with a rubber-like material to prevent future infections. Finally, we install a dental crown to protect your already weakened tooth. After the treatment, you may experience a little discomfort or swelling, but our dental team will give you aftercare tips to hasten recovery.
